help me catch BASS please

good day all

i am totally new to bass fishing and well i would like to know about local spots in and around the radius of say 100km from jhb city centre i have recently visited places suggested by a few people but with no luck not even one bite.

i would highly appreciate any and all information regarding bass fishing from lures to hot spots complete gear that i may need. i have been surf fishing for many years but i learnt it all from an old shcool fisherman being my grand dad and i have realised that there is a major difference in tackle and approach to this amazing sport.

many thanks

Hi,
There are a lot of good Bass fishing spots in an around JHB and it depends if you have a boat or not where you go to fish.
Just some info on lures.
I fish plastic baits like senko, fluke and brush hog.
The colors.
Watermelon seed, junebug and green pumpkin.
With these basic colors you should catch a Bass.
:)

thanks JCK

i have visited an old quarry in edenvale but with no luck i tried june bug and green pumkin we even tried a few spinners with not a single bite . yet we did notice that as the tempreture dropped there was a change in feeding pattern more top water but they just dont bite u can see them in shoals on the top water but nothing ever helped and as for a boat we dont have one yet but i am on the look out i will be visiting other spots this coming weekend and willll keep u updated as to my luck with your recomendations as to using your suggested lures.

thanks

How do you fish the plastic lures?

There are many ways to present a plastic lure but the one that works for me is to fish weightless just a 5/0 to 8/0 wide gap Mustad Bass hook rigged wheedles.

I then cast to any structure I can find and let it drop to the bottom carefully watching the line after the first drop if a bass has not taken the lure you will know how deep the lake or river is then you cast again at the same spot if you see the line halfway to the bottom stop STRIKE! The bass is on. Remember you might not feel the strike so line watching is very important any movement strike it might be the big one.

If the wind picks up I tie a swivel 300mm or more from the hook (Carolina rig) for more weight and sometimes some lead wire around the hook shank.

The retrieve I use is take up the slack of the line with the rod level with the water and then lift the tip about 300mm, take up slack and lift, take up slack and lift, get the picture. A slow retrieve is very important I have had bass take the lure almost on the bank.

:)

thanks jck

well i will be trying all that u have said and i am sure its gonna work well tomorrow i will be going back there to see if anythings bite but i will definetly keep everything in mind that you have told me well if i catch one i will surely post it up here for u to know until then take care

HI DONALD

YES you do pay its R50.00 per person strictly catch and release not much parking space but the guy who runs it told me that they have plans to upgrade the place and get it all cleaned up.

How far away from springs are you cos i caught a 3kg bass in the murray park dam. The entrance fee is R10 and the fishing is good there. You must try the june bug lure cos thats what i caught that and another one of about 1.5kgs also on the same day.

Not bad for a durbanite that just went twice to that dam.

hi,

Try Emmerentia Dam in Greenside. The bass are not huge but they can keep you busy on 6lb line and you will get the odd tains(barbel) on the plastic lures.

Most of the bites are during sunrise and sunset. if you want to join me drop me a line 011 4083594.

Hi Guys

Well I'm still "salty" in my fishing habits. I fished once with my son at one of the trout farms in Jhb....and he really enjoyed himself. The members in Durban are fishing a lot of social competitions and it is really working out great. We all are learning new places, tricks and techniques......and it is a lot more safer to fish when all the guys are together. We are currently setting up the next comp at Tugela and if you guys are free, please join us.....

Guess I got off the topic....from the posts that I've seen , maybe it will be a good idea to set a bass competition up......socially of course......It has been on the administrators minds for some time, but I see that we are getting some responses from the fresh water side. This is exellent.

It you guys want to initiate it...please free to contact me or any of the administrators...we are here to help.

Happy hunting

Hi Guys

I'm fairly new to the bass scene, have been actively fishing for bass for two years now, and have done most of my fishing from the bank as I'm not that fortunate to be the owner of a Bassboat, well not yet at least.

I am a Complete and hopeless ADICT and will go to any inconvenience (to myself only) to go fishing, however it's the long hours of driving to get to places that gets to me a little and sure as bassin is the only thing that makes you realise your alive, it gets to the wife a whole lot more and she doesn't even go with (me getting early up just doesn't make sense to her, and I have tried explaining).

Anyhow, I've bumped accross and seen many an article about fishing in the JHB area, I'm specifically interested in the Quarry in Edenvale and Murray Park dam in Springs.  If anybody could please supply me with directions from Pretoria and some info iro entrance fees, facilities etc at these places it would be greatly appreciated.

I've also got some info on other places and will gladly share it with anybody that needs it.  My info is my own personnal experience/s on the following waters:

Rust de Winter                      Limpopo

Klein paradys                        North West

Oppi koppi Bass Farm           North West

Buffelspoort Dam                  North West

Vasfontein Bass Estate         Gauteng (Pretoria)

Roodeplaat Dam                    Pretoria

Bass 'O Mania                        Mpumalanga

Your kind help is greatly anticipated, I'm heading out to Hunt for these Little Green Fish this Friday, Yeah, I'm working for the G-man and was lucky enough to get leave.

Thanks a mill in advance

hi little green fish

firstly, welcome to this site, i see that u have also only recently joined sealine, hope u will enjoy this non-racial, non-political, pornless, good mannered, swearless and lovely site with its friendly members as much as i do.

secondly please update your profile so we can 'see' you with better 'eyes

thirdly i totally agree with all the spots and dams you mentioned i think we can ad a few more nice bassing dams such as Tzaneen dam, middle letaba dam, ebenaeser dam all in limpopo and albert falls in kzn where good bass fishng can be done

happy bassing

ps. these days i am starting to enjoy freshwater fishing more than saltwater fishing, i think our freshwater fish reserves of fish are in a better state than at sea, ...but that is just my opinion.

regards

Hi TJS

Thanks for the welcome, and don't worry about the swearing, porn, racial and other relating issues of negativity, I for one don't have the time nor the luxury of spending my energy on negative things like that.  I am addicted to fishing.  So I suppose it will be in oder to say; "Hi everybody, my name is LGF and I'm am a BASSAHOLIC.  No seriously I want to fish those LGF's and hopefully become a Pro at it, so I don't want to spoil a site like this as it has taken me hours and hours and more countless hours of searching the Web for a place like this.

Anyway, with that out of the way, could you perhaps give me some directions to the two fishing venues I mentioned in my opening post being Edenvale Quarry and Murray Park Dam in Springs please?

I hope this is the right way to get the most replies to a post, if not I'll scratch around and see if I could perhaps get to the main page where I can post a brand new topic/request.

Thanks again for making me feel welcome and remeber, "A BAD day's Fishing is still better than a Good Day at Work"

Happy Hunting those LGF.

Howzit LGF,

Welcome to the site! I have interacted on this forum from a salt water fishing perspective only, but it is great to see some really enthusiastic freshwater anglers as well. I started my fishing fetish with those lgf's and has taken off in a mad way since then.

We have some really good bass waters here on the coast as well. If you are ever in the area give me a shout and I'm sure we can rustle up a few more guys to go on the boat and look for those really good out-of-reach spots. Here we have Inanda dam, Hazelmere, Nagle dam, and of course Midmar and Albert Falls in the Pietermaritzburg area. Most of them work really well. Next month is the annual pilgrimage to the Inanda Bass Classic. Man, this tournament is HUGE! You have to see it to believe it.

I would like to check out the Gauteng spots when I'm up there again. I'm always keen to try out new grounds.

All the best and tite lines!
Cheers

Hi Mornay,

Thanks for the welcome.  Perhaps all my posts should start with: " Hi, my name is Litte Green Fish, ... ... .. .. . and I'm an addict"  And then everybody should reply "Hi Litte Green Fish..."

Not kidding, I'm frequently at the doors of divorce lawyers because of my addiction, but thankfully I've managed to keep us out of their offices so far.

I've never fished for those LGF's outside of the Pretoria and surrounding areas, the furthest that I've gone hunting was in the North West province at a place called Buffelspoort, planning to venture even further in April to Mpumalanga.  However, I've noticed an advertisment about Bell's Bass Lake near Balito.  Have you ever been there and if so how's the fishing?

Remember a Bad Day's Fishing is still Better than a Good Day at the office.

Happy Hunting

If I may... Try involve her in your fishing... Even girls get hooked :D

I have an addictive personality as well, and all I think about is Bass fishing at the moment... But I involve my wife, and it certainly helps.

Or, help her find a hobby that takes her out of the house too, preferrably on days that you want to go fish (weekends)

Other than finding fishing spots, you need to read my friend, and when you done reading, you need to read some more.

Only once you are educated will you catch more, I believe. you will also never know everything :)

Oh and be careful of the lure trap... Too many types and colours of lures is a problem, not a blessing.

There are so many wonderful Bass info sites, and yes, most of them are USA based, but if any country knows about the Green Thang, its them Yanks.

Over the last 3 months I have compiled a folder (printed) with over 300 pages of info on how to fish certain lures, how weather affects Bass, where, what and when and more, and all of that info was found on the Internet.

Google is your friend here.

Tight lines!

Guys

Take note of Loams post, it's the truth, them Yanks has a lot about them LGF's and the Big GF's also.

I too have collected a smallish hill of info on just about every type of Lure, condition weather patren, Bass behaviour, tackle choices, uses etc. etc. even vido clips that show the various movements of various lures and most importantly your actions effects on your lures.  Really I've learned alot and am still every single hour of every day.

About getting the wife involved, MMMMAAAAAANNNNNN have I tried, (I even took up the Female Sport, Yes, I ashamedly have to admit, : "SHOPPING") but I'll deny any quote of this admission).  She has gone with before and actually tried hooking into a LGF but that didn't happen and I think the only time she ever go again is when I am a proud owner of a Bassboat, which is what I'm working towards, till then its more shopping for me whenever she wants to, so that I can go hunting LGF's now and then.

No really, I've managed to land the best Little Babe, she's stunning but does not always agree with me getting up early no matter how quiet I do it, she just hates waking up with me already gone (with her authority of cause).

Anyway, thanks for all the info Guys, it's much appreciated. Really.

Happy Hunting those LGF's Loams, you're making me green with envy, really green.
