HI guys,

Looks like you have a great site here!  My name is John, I live in New York City, USA - all the way on the other side of the globe from you pretty much.  I'm an avid fisherman, I've been fishing since I was 5 years old, and even though I live in one of the most metropolitan places you could imagine I still get to fish close to 100 days a year, a lot of that in the heart of the city in the East River, a tidal estuary separating Manhattan island from Brooklyn.  In fact, I catch a lot of what you call Shad, and ironically, it's one of the few fish that AREN'T experiencing sever regulatory restrictions here.  Funny how things can be the same and at the same time so different on the other side of the world.

But anyway, the reason I've joined Sealine is because I recently married the daughter of a South African couple (but my wife was born in Texas) and as their new inlaw they are taking me down to South Africa for two and a half weeks to see the country and meet the family.

Unfortunately none of them fish.  Not only that, they get seasick so they won't even entertain it as a novelty.

I'll be visiting Cape Town 4/3-4/9 and I would LOVE to get some fishing in while I'm there, but so far the only option I've found is to hire a charter on my own, the cost of which I've found to be a little high for just one person to pay.

Can anyone help me find a charter that will take me on a shared charter?  Or alternatively, I would be happy to share expenses on someone's private boat... pay for gas, cut bait, whatever.  Or a third option, if anyone wants to join me in a charter and split the costs I could do that too.

Any and all information and advice is appreciated, and anyone curious about fishing over here in New York can ask away.

Thanks,

-John

(here's a picture of a 33" bluefish... or what you call shad, I caught this summer behind my apartment in Brooklyn on a 5" rubber minnow jig)

Hi John

Welcome to Sealine.
I'm new to the scene so I can't tell you much, I still depend on  others for guidance.
Regarding charters, I've come across a charter boat that goes out regularly from Kalk Bay harbour, weather permitting of course. The trip usually lasts 5-6 hours and cost  around R200 per person. Around $30.00 They provide all the tackle and bait, and have some experts on board for guidance. I spoke to a lady named michelle on 082 415 6035. International format would be 27 82 415 6035
Hope this helps.

Achmat

Hey John,

Welcome to South Africa, we being South Africans and i hope i speak for everybody have a rather unique sense of humour so hope you share them with us as i am sure we all at sealine enjoy meeting new people and sharing our knowledge, humour, opinions and last but not least catching the big ones.

Me for example have not caught anything worth talking about.

Shad in South Africa or elf as its known in the Cape is a greedy scavenger that eats anything as i know it

Come on you guys in the Cape, give the guy something he can work with.

Regards,

kingfish

Hi John

Welcome to Sealine!! I joined a couple of days ago and I have really enjoyed the friendly banter amongst the members. I am from from Cape Town but I only do shore and estuary fishing. I do have a friend who often goes out from Hout Bay to catch Yellowfin Tuna. He is always looking for crew during the week and I will contact him and see if he can accomodate you.

I am told that he has not struck out for the past two years and has regularly boated 80kg (176pd) plus Yellowfin.

Hi all in KZN

I am going to the Kozi Bay mouth in mid March for a week of Giant Kingfish fishing. This will be my first time so any information whatsoever will be helpful.

Regards

Hi Light Tackle

Welcome to "fishermans paradise"

Fishing at Kosi Bay....please be careful.....there some hijackings there recently.

Contact Volcom.....he is from that area....he can give you some pointers or maybe even hookup with you.....

If you are in KZN during March, we are holding a comp at tugela mouth on the 17 and 18 March. It would be great to have you join us....

Hi Dinesh

Thanks for the invite to the comp. Unfortunately we are going via JHB and then to Nelspruit before heading off to Kosi Bay. We are staying about 100m from the mouth in a wooden cabin. Please let me know when and where are these hijackings taking place as would like to pass this information onto the rest of the party.

I will most definately contact Volkom and invite Him to join us if He can.

LT - that's exactly what I was hoping to find - Thank you!  If your friend is concerned about my experience level with tuna fishing you can tell him I've got some... maybe 5-10 trips each year for the last 4 years, our runs to the tuna grounds are 80-200 miles, so it's hard to make a lot of trips and still have a life outside of offshore fishing. Our YFT average only 20-40 kg here, we do get them larger once in a while, and much larger bigeye and bluefin, but I haven't connected with any of those trophies yet.  Here's a nice longfin probably over 30kg I took last Fall, the longfin we have here get much larger than in most places, if  there's a world record in the tuna family that will be broken out of NY, it's probably longfin.

...And thanks to all for the warm welcome!  I belong to a similar online community for anglers in the north east US called noreast, it's a great place where I've met a lot of good friends over the years and hugely expanded my fishing horizons, it's great to see the same thing going on here!
