Lol

Welcome bru hope i can help although i'm no pro

I think the first thing you need to do is decide what sort of fishing you wana do most

I mean sea fishing that is ......

Then once you've decide that you can choose maybe something for that particular purpose eg. blue marlon hmg or asassin hmg for the big guys then you need to know weather u want 3 pcs or single.

My advise is in the beginning you need to buy an all round rod some thing that you can do everything with.....

My choice for you would be the beach master its reasonably priced good value also it can handle big fish as well as normal edible fish that is my choice for you but you  have to be comfortable with what outfit you choose if possible get the tackle shop to let you demo it im not sure if they would but hey its worth the try good luck .....

hey mum

i agree with riymos totally.once you have decided on what you intend targetting the decision would be alot easier.now adays rods n reels are extremely specialised in their application.

a trip to a leading tackle dealer should make your selection alot easier.

JUST to give yuo my experience, when i fist started fishing i used on of those cheap R200 okuma rod and reel combo. Thereafter with learning more i moved to a shimano 20 40 (which is still my favorite). I think fisherman are like woman and shopping. the more we see others have and newer models the more we want. teh ESA guys dont help either. most of the common reels today are made using advances technology. How many times do you get stripped of all your line. It only almost happeneed to me once in teh last 5 years(unless im a bad angler)i then moved to an SL 50 (which i personally dont like but others swear by) and tehn to a torium and then to a trinidad 30. rod from a posiedon, asssain hea, elbe waverrunner and then to teh Blade HMG.

MY advice is choose a reel for the fishing you want to do, an alrounder is best. later on you might want to target sharks, then you still have the neccessary tackle. teh way i have done it is too costly, and you wont need to ahve all.

Many of us are manipulated by advertising.

How many times have you heard a tackle shop for example saying teh kingfisher braid is terrible, then you realise its just because they dont keep kingfisher products. those tackle shops that only keep berkley swear that other lure brands are not as good, its about keeping sponsors happy.

i have been personnaly given the worst advice by tackle shops. Eg teh assasin heavy and Blade standard is about R200 difference. but the guy from bassil manning insisted there is no other rod within a similar price range of teh assasin heavy. a week later i found out that the Blade standard is R200 more. i was very angry. cos i kept on asking him. eventually i bought it and when to spend close to R4000 for a blade HMG.if they advise properly i would not have spent so much.

So be careful when buying tackle

Blade, i couldnt have said it better myself. You are right on the money...:first

Mumro from my own experience with Surf rods, id say the ieal rod to start of with would be the Assasin Beach Master. I have one and i must say its a good all rounder. Its not in the league of your Blades and HMG rods, but it is more than capable of handling your average size shark.

I would say go with that rod matched with a Shimano Toirum 30. That to me is a very capable outfit. You would be able to tackle almost anything the sea throws at you. At the end its what is comfortable in your hands that matters.

Hope this helps you

i think if you like the 12 ft

then the trinada 30 is good

but hey if you like the saltiga 50 then go for it i think its the best. but for an allround package i mean eds and non eds its to much, i think go for the saltiga 40 the combo would be much better. 40 and the 12ft balances the outfit better.

you dont want two put too big a reel on a med action rod it defeats the purpose.

hope ive been of some help .

Hi Guys

OK I have recently acquired the Shimano Exage 1224 rod which I use with a Penn 505HS that I'm quite new to using, having been an old KP guy in my KZN days, and Diawa Jupiter 5000 Coffee Grinder when first down here because I got lazy.

I'm quite happy with the rod and reel as a combo and it feels right.  Now for the interesting part - I've been a good boy and only used 2ounce sinker on the light tip, 3 ounce on the medium tip and 4 ounce on the heavy tip, my only problem is 70m seems about MAX distance I can cast with the heavy and the 4 ounce sinker.  That includes hanging the sinker and the hook to improve the aerodynamics.

Any ideas or tips that can get me that little bit further out?

Thanks

Hey Coxy

What is the max weight for your heavy tip? Also what casting action do you use?

Hey guys. I really dont think you should put a trinidad 30 on a 12 ft rod. firstly you gona use heavy sinkers to carry the line a good distance, as teh line is going to be of a thicker diameter. You need a good reaction rod to match teh trinidad. what do you guys feel

YOu could use the 12 ft rod with the TN 30 if yu swimming out live sharks as bait. for this type of fishing you dont need a long rod nor are you casting sinkers miles. you need a short robust rod

Hi Mum

Blade has given you some excellent advice......and for free.....If you want to start surf fishing (totally different from bass fishing), I suggest that you take Blades advice and go for something more average. I personally use a 14 ft Kingfisher Delux..weighted tip 5 to 6 ounce......and I fished all round with that ( However that is a single piece...not what you are lookig for) and I have caught everything from pinkies to sharks....just need to test it on a 150kg monster though......

My suggestion to you is go for a 14 ft rod, cos sooner or later the bug is gonna get you, and you will start looking for FURTHER DISTANCE when casting....also a 14ft makes handling any fish a lot easier from the surf. Reels . I would suggest the  Daiwa Grandwave 40/50,  Saltist 40/50 or the Shimano Torium ....all have proven themselves....and I re-iterate what Blade has said.....don't fall for all the marketing gimmicks.....just buy what you are happy and comfortable with....

Happy hunting

Dinesh
