Angler robbed at gunpoint (Leaches Bay - EL)

An East London angler fled into the sea for safety on Sunday afternoon when attacked and stabbed by four armed men at Leaches Bay, writes Bongani Fuzile.

 

Marius van der Merwe survived what he thought was his last day on earth when the thugs, wielding knives, confronted him on the beach and robbed him of his vehicle and fishing equipment.

 

“How I survived is a miracle. On Sunday I thought my day had come. They put a knife to my throat and demanded everything. I didn’t resist,” said Van der Merwe.

 

The keen angler was at his favourite fishing spot at Leaches Bay with his 1994 VW Golf.
