Prizes will be announced shortly!!!

Keep the date open as this will probably be our last Cob comp before the gallie season start!

Hope to see you all there!!!

Please note that the registration as well as the weigh-in will take place at the same venue aka Engen One Stop N2 (False bay). This is the Engen Garage that you get while travelling on the N2 towards the Strand. We will be in the parking lot, just look out for the SSEC:WC banner.

Please note that the program and rules may change due to unforeseen circumstances.

Hi SSEC:WC Members and all interested Sealiners

Please take note of the Club’s Members meeting on Tuesday, 15 March 2011 in preparation of the Club’s Open Cob competition on 26 March 2011 at Muizenberg to Gordons Bay. The Club will also hold it's regular monthly competition at the same time.

Date: Tuesday 15 March 2011
Time: 18H00 for 19H00
Venue: The Hunt & Polo Club, Durbanville

All members are urged to attend, please.

Kindly note that if all goes as planned we will again hold some casting exercises from 18:00 prior to the meeting.

All new and prospective members are also most welcome.

Indien u enige verdere Agenda items wil byvoeg, pm my asseblief.

I am glad that you are having another one as the last one was so informative and to little time to catch. You are doing a great job and keep up the good work. I have learned more from you that i could learn in the last 3 years on my own. I nearly threw in the towel and gave it up for a bad job but now I am reinvigorated. Thanks

Just a suggestion and this is only a suggestion (for the next comp). With regards to registration, can we not pay the fee into a banking account then an entry fee number gets allocated per "PM" to the contestants. The reference number on the banking details will be their alias/name. This will save some guys a trip to the registration point and also the rush for registration. (is 'n bietjie vroeg vir paar manne)

A copy of the registration form can be posted on the website and printed out by the contestant.

I would expect only the admin guys to respond to this mail.

Hi there. The reason we haven't done it this way is purely to eliminate or try to minimize cheating.... If you have your number prior to the competition, nothing stops you from driving to struisbaai the evening before or even 3 the morning. You can still probably cheat this way if you want, but few guys will leave here at 5 for struis to be back for the weigh in at 4.

We just want everyone to have an equal start.

Marthin, I think 99% of the entrants has some integrity. Whoever is going to ride out to Struisbaai to cheat just to win the competition must be out of their mind or very desperate to win. One of the rules with the last comp was that it should be witnessed by another competitor. (I could stand to be corrected).

As I said, it is only a suggestion. Thanks for the reply and thanks for organising these events.

@hotnot, thanks for the inputs. We gladly receive any constructive inputs and will keep it in mind for future reference.
With regards to cheating, you would be surprised to hear what some okes get up to to win these competitions. During a Galjoen competition at Melkbosstrand some time ago, some competitors apparently went so far as to shoot Galjoen with spear guns and later submitting their `catches` at the weigh-in.  I know it will be difficult to prevent guys from cheating, even for anglers to connive and `witness` each other's illigal catches under the current arrangements, but at least this way we make it just that little bit more difficult to cheat.
Hope to see you Saturday morning bright and early!!! LOL

hotnot, the venue for the registration and weigh in is the center point of the area we fish in, so there should'nt be a problem to get there like the rest of us. You can grab yourself a lekka warm cup of coffee at the shop and from there you can go and catch the big one! If you snooze, you loose...at the end of the day it's your choice to pay just R50.00, rise earlier and stand a chance to win yourself a prize or two! The registration officers will probably be there till 05h30 and if you move from there to your fishing spot, the time you get your line in the water the sun is out already.

I would expect only the admin guys to respond to this mail.

hotnot, the venue for the registration and weigh in is the center point of the area we fish in, so there should'nt be a problem to get there like the rest of us.

Galjoen, I don't have a problem getting there early. For me it is all part of the event. Was just thinking of you guys doing the all the ground work and the laat slapers.

Don't worry about us, if I had it my way I would be there at 03h00....:fbash

3 days to go....then it's time to target some big cob again. cpt fly caught a nice specimen last week so it seems they still around! There's some great prizes up for grabs so we hope to see the guys pulling out all stops to target some big cob and remember if you catch the biggest cob over 15 kg, you'll walk away with a brand new Shimano Torium 30 and a additional prize of a 5 day (Monday to Friday) breakaway in Mosselbay for 6 people....worth R5000.00!!! 2nd place will win yourself a Shimano Speedmaster and 3rd place will get you a custom made splash jacket sponsored by Saltwater Super Series...plus many more other prizes up for grabs!

Remember that registration will take place at the Engen 1 Stop False Bay(N2), it's the Engen garage on the N2 towards Strand. We'll be there from 04h30 to 05h30 the latest.

Can't wait!!!

Hi Guys,

Don't you think released fish are worth more to yourselves as well as the next generation (your sons) than a few shimano reels and tackle bags, just some food for thought.

The kob are really in a bad state!!

Ftruter, we base 99% of our competitions on catch and release here at SSEC. We have a point system specifically devised to promote catch and release of bigger specimens, rewarding the angler handsomely. For example the fish I kept today only got me 10 points in our club comp. Had I released it I would have earned about 80 points. The winner of our club comp for this month that run in conjunction with the kob comp, won because he released his fish. However in the case of the comp, handsome prizes and allowing the guys the entire false bay, to prevent the possibility of cheating we decided to have a weigh in. Our previous open comp was up to the angler and catch and release was possible because the area was much smaller.

I trust this makes sense.

Hi Marthin, thanks for your response, it does clear things up and I am glad and almost proud in a way that the comp guys have brought the "more points for released fish" in.  Why don't you make ALL your comps catch and release where possible.  The term "weigh in" has then just become misleading and should be changed.

People tend to get upset if you tell them what to do. So when we organise open competitions to the public, and it's in a small enough area where one can keep an eye, we leave the decision up to the angler. This has brought on very positive results so far regarding release. During such a comp if u catch a 50cm kob and release it and I catch a 50cm kob and keep it, u win for example. We have a galjoen clinic and comp coming up, where the prizes will be close to nothing seen in the western cape for shore based angling to date. We will give more detail, but for now one of the prizes is a helicopter flip for 4 around the peninsula.

Here is the problem with length measurements tho. The day we held our kob clinic, we went on lenght measurements to enable catch and release. The first and second fish were kept by the anglers, as this is their choice. But it clearly showed the problem with length measurements. The winning fish was a couple of cm bigger than the guy who came second. But everyone present could see the second fish was much fatter and bigger than the one that came first.

So when you have a comp where the prizes are going to tally up to R30 000, you can see that there could be a small riot and questions being asked. But it is a problem that we are working on, and you have a good point. The nice thing about catch and release tournaments, is that if galjoen are biting, you can continue targetting them and catch 50 for the day if you want. We have not finalized the prizes for the comp, but perhaps a prize for most galjoen caught can have anglers look at releasing. I think catch and release only has one hope, if you give the angler the choice and don't force it on them. My personal motto in club comps is first one goes in the box, release and score points after that. But keep following the ssec threads,

So the big day finally arrived.... I had slept exactly 2 and a half hours.  Livebait was sorted thanx to my uncle, Rupert N.  I can't throw a thrownet, so he managed to throw them for me.  We were only able to get small ones, but on his second last attempt het got a nice one, and as i put it into the livewell, i told him "dis n kabeljou daai".  Thanx again oom.

So everyone started arriving at the Engen on the N2 from about 4 the morning.  When i got there Craigie Boy was already there, he must have had an oops in the bed or been kicked out or both....

Everyone got a nice coffee and a few last things at the Engen shop.  Some stories from past comps were traded, and our very efficient competition secretaries ran the entries like clockwork....

By this time Wikus had managed to nearly land a very big smooth hound, while it was still a little dark. He just put the rod into the rodholder after shaking down the livie, and the drag started screaming. Unfortunately the hook trace broke right at the side.

As mentioned Galjoen was on with another smoothie... 167cm when it was landed.... as per the last competition me and him fished together, i saw my rod dip while he was fighting a shark.... i thought perhaps wave action, but the next bounce had me running accross the rocks.  Hold the rod... dip dip, he's there!!! one nice strike and VAS!! work him in nicely, then a wave comes in and i think it's off.... play nicely, hope it's not a shark... then i saw the silver and i knew i was on the scoreboard!!!

I was so excited i didnt take any pics immediately.

Anycase kob is on the scoreboard.  Then nothing for an hour or so.  We decide to head down to the aasbankies and try our luck for the SSEC club comp by trying for some reef fish.

Below is craigieboy... all this rescueing of other guys fish earlier the morning had left him a little winded...

Galjoen slided in a mullet so big it could have been weighed in as an edible.... We then all went onto the aasbankies but the "dooie gety" was just too high to get to the nicer spots.  But anycase all of us tried.  Wikus and Myself went quite far to the left.  His rod with the monster mullet being all the way to the right....

The time had come for the weigh in.  Now a lot of guys were congratulating me already, but i had fished a couple of these comps where the winning fish was caught in the last 30 minutes.  After Trini D left in a rush the morning, and not seeing Monty for the whole day i was nervous.

There were a lot of good anglers that took part.  The Villiage People supported our comp with a lot of their anglers.  Thanx again guys!  Every now and then you'd see a bakkie speeding around the corner as the time grew nearer.

My fish was weighed in the meantime.... 3.14kg modified kob.

To everyone that participated thanx very much for your support.  Especially to the guys that are from other clubs, we hope to return the favour soon!

To our sponsors thanx again for your ongoing support.  Also to our competition secretaries and the SSEC as a whole.  Another successful event held through hard work, and determination.

Guys please keep an eye out for the coming Galjoen Clinic as well as the comp that is going to form part of it.  It is going to be amazing and the prizes for the competition that we have confirmed so far is mindblowing.  We will be putting more information up soon, not only will this be a comp to remember but there is also a good cause attached to it, that needs everyone that fishes in the western cape to support it.  But more on that later....

The end of a perfect day...

The best part though is Wikus driving off without making sure his rods are secure! The next moment it looks like Ockert Britz's poles flying. Luckily no damage!

Several posts have already been made with a number of nice pics of the lucky anglers who received prizes. I would like to, however, post this “formal/official” report regarding the various winners and awards on the day.

Those who participated in Saturday’s SSEC:WC Open Cob Competition in the False Bay will all tell you that the circumstances for fishing were perfect. Very little wind, the water was beautiful apart from some sand being kicked-up here and there, the bait was fresh, the company was good and the spirits were high. Just one small factor though…….. the water was cold, blerrie cold and a bit rough in places. Maybe that was the problem as very little fish came out. Only one size Cob was caught by Marthin, who also won first prize in the Open Cob competition.

A number of Shad were caught, amongst others by Ebs (one of 38cm) and Snapper (two 38 and 39cm), which duly earned Snapper the of SSEC:WC Angler of the Month award. It’s not known whether any other edible fish were caught by any of the non-SSEC:WC Club members, as only Cob counted towards the Open Cob Competition.

As only one Cob was weighed-in only the first prize, a beautiful Shimano Torium 30 reel (sponsored by SSEC:WC) was won by the lucky winner, Marthin. The other prizes, namely a Shimano TLD 15/30 reel (sponsored by Suburban Sports), a very special Splash Jacket (sponsored by Shaun Prinsloo of Oceanic), a nice tackle bag (sponsored by SSEC:WC) and a battery operated live bait live well (also sponsored by SSEC:WC itself), as well as the special prize for the largest Cob over 15 kg of a week long stay at a holiday house at Mossel Bay   (sponsored by a Club member) were not awarded and will stand over to a future competition.

A number of Spot Prizes were, however, awarded to the following anglers:
Paul Coetzee – Collection of made-up traces by Traces 4 Africa
Wesley Collins – Collection of traces by Traces 4 Africa
Mobi Dick – Collection of traces by Traces 4 Africa
André – Collection of traces by Traces 4 Africa
Nabil – A Bait Encyclopedia by Raymond De Bruyn
Grant – A Bait Encyclopedia by Raymond De Bruyn
Leonard – Bait Presentation DVD by Raymond De Bruyn

The Club’s next major event is the much anticipated Galjoen Clinic and Open Galjoen Competition during May 2011. You simply cannot afford to miss it. Apart from the very educational Galjoen Clinic, the prizes on offer for the competition are simply out of this world.
Full details in this regard will be publicised in the very near future, So watch this space.

A word of thanks to all our generous sponsors for their contributions and the Club officials that worked hard to make this event yet again a great success.

Lastly thank you to all the anglers that participated so enthusiastically, all 68 of you. Without your participation this event would simply have been a non-event.

Wow Marthin, great report and once again congratulations on winning the Torium 30...I know the feeling...lol

Yes, we fished hard and had great fun. The smoothies kept me busy but it still beats catching nothing. Thanks to the SSEC:WC guys doing the registration, you all were super, also with only 1 cob/geelbek to weigh it made my job easy...lol

Marthin, I think we must do one more slide session for cob with that new Torium30 then we can call it a day for the big fish and start to fish the gallie season in full force.
