Hi guys,

I went fishing off the east coast of the UAE yesterday with Gavin also on this forum.

The last thing I was thinking about coming to work in Dubai was fishing but after meeting Gavin we really started enjoying the fishing possibilities here.

I got my Abu Brute send from home and I used the reel yesterday to cast buck tail jigs, spoons and rapala's at feeding fish.

I had plenty of chases and strikes but no possible hookup because I could not get the lure moving fast enough.

Gavin caught a very nice Cuta, Dorado and Queen Fish with his spinning setup.

I used Gavin's used his spinning set up for a couple of casts and caught this Queen Fish.

Now I need to buy the right gear for spinning lures to around 2 ounce and also use it for drop shot fishing from shore....

Any suggestions....

G - A quality spinning reel from either SHimano or Diawa( yes I said Diawa!! ) will do the job nicely... I'd look at something in the 4000 to 6000 size if you wanna use it for both offshore and inshore work, although you could get away with a 3000 if you don't hook into anything to size....
Your most important thing is to look for a reelw ith a quality drag system, because on spinning reels, especially in the salt, these are the first to go.... From Shimano you could look at the Sustain, the Stradic and if you got big cash to lay out, a Stella... I'm not sure on the models from Diawa....

Look for something with at least a 5.2:1 retreive ratio and spool up with 20 to 30 lb braid, and away you go....

I'd look at a 3000 or 4000 size reel if I were you... Unless you are hooking into Tuna that are gonna run you a mile, its unliely that you'll need a reel with more capacity if you are fishing light.... a smooth drag is more important.... if a fish runs you out of 250 metres of string, she'll probably smoke you or reef you anyway.... :)

Thanks Nepptune,

I just bought a 4000 Stradic in South Africa.

Interesting is that almost no shop in Pretoria had a Stradic in stock and all were waiting for stock and with the exchange rate the price is going to rocket sky high.

Will load it with 20lbs Fire Line and should be ready to rock and roll.

I got if for a better price than I could get one on eBay as well.

Now for the problem of getting it to Dubai...

G - Awesome reel bud, you'll love it!!! Great buy, and perfect for what you want to do with it....

Now if you really want to hurt yourself on some fish near you ( I think, I dunno how close Dubai is to Oman.... but its certainly closer than here!!! ) check out Nick at www.oceanactive.com..... Ex - SA boy running a world class operation up there... one of the best..

The biggest and baddest GT's on the planet, in HUGE numbers, all on poppers..... we talking 50 kilo plus fish....

I know Nick. Have not met him but spoke a lot on the phone.

I used one of his charters for 4 hours and caught nothing and its not nice to pay R1750 with nothing but sun tan to show...

The GT's are monsters here.

Nick says his biggest is 49kg's.

I bought a temple fork 7ft spinning rod as well today.

Should be a well balanced setup.

Just got to get it from SA to Dubai somehow....
