I requested a permit for the area between the Umtata river mouth and Mbolompo point. The wording on the permit stated that driving off the road at Umtate river mouth and at Mbolompo was allowed. All the areas inbetween seemed to be excluded. I would also like some clarity on this. If I read the wording correctly you may drive to Umtata Mouth and Mbolompo Point but not to places like Mapuzi (sp) or mhlugwan(sp).. So I don't quite see the point in obtaining the licence.

I applied again for a driving permit for the hole-in-the-wall area and after a months delay I finally got it. Problem is, this time they have been very specific wrt the areas I am allowed to drive. No more driving is allowed to either Hlungulwana or Mbolompo point. Has anyone been there lately and have you experienced the same issue? Is there anyway of getting around this?

This has actually always been the case, anglers have just chosen to ignore it. Legally you drive to the last point allowed and walk down. 10 min walk tops.

Any idea what the safety of the vehicles are like? I suppose you must take a gillie with as a car guard if you do this?

Was at Mazeppa bay over easter. Hotel staff say they are not going to be issuing permits for bikes or quads anymore. This is due to the disrespect the bikers have been showing to the local enviroment. Too much roadkill and road destroying especially in wet conditions.

I got my permits today,it took Bongeka 10days from receiving my application.Bongeka was very helpful and pleasant to deal with. I sent through the following: Application form ID copy Google earth map of the areas we will be going. Makes a pleasant change from the normal Government departments that I deal with!!

The problem is those guys on quads and bikes do lots of damage to the roads and can be a noisy nuisance, we have a road going past our place and they are a menace sometimes.

Greetings guys, we fished Mazeppa and surrounds twice last year, both times we got our permits without waiting too long, like within a week. Both times we fished the area for over a week but nobody ever checked our driving permits.
