Hi All

As has been widely discussed, you are required to have a permit if you want to travel to remote fishing spots such as Boiling Pot, Nqorra River or Mlungwhane.

The permit is free and designates the area you can travel

The lady you can contact is

Anet Landman
Tel No: 043 7074055
Fax No: 0865190526
anet.landman@deaet.ecape.gov.za

Here's the application form

You apply for the permit per visit. It takes 24-48 hours for issuing but as with all government departments i would recommend applying 2 weeks in advance

From what I understand there are 2 different offices one for South and the other for North but I'm sure anet can elaborate.

Has anyone been fined although you these permits in hand. I got a permit in April which I used, but it had very strange wording on it. I requested a permit for the area between the Umtata river mouth and Mbolompo point. The wording on the permit stated that driving off the road at Umtate river mouth and at Mbolompo was allowed. All the areas inbetween seemed to be excluded.

I fail to understand why one require a permit to drive on a road, be it a gravel road, to a (remote) fishing spot in your own country??  ((wideeye))

People who live in remote living areas exit that and roam the streets of the more densely inhabited areas of the country without any permit.

:walk

Am I missing something??

Along with the permits come rules and regulations that are brought to your attention, this is a manner of making sure you know of such rules and regulations as many of the "Affluent" occasional visitors abuse these routes and tear them up with the extravagant 4 x 4's threatening to have them closed to all the visitors to these largely unspoilt areas.

I would also like some clarity on this. If I read the wording correctly you may drive to Umtata Mouth and Mbolompo Point but not to places like Mapuzi (sp) or mhlugwan(sp)..

So I don't quite see the point in obtaining the licence.

I applied again for a driving permit for the hole-in-the-wall area and after a months delay I finally got it. Problem is, this time they have been very specific wrt the areas I am allowed to drive. No more driving is allowed to either Hlungulwana or Mbolompo point. Has anyone been there lately and have you experienced the same issue? Is there anyway of getting around this?

This has actually always been the case, anglers have just chosen to ignore it.

Legally you drive to the last point allowed and walk down. 10 min walk tops.

Yep, the more info you give/supply, the easier it will be to process.... Email is also way better/faster than faxed docs... Just add the words; pretty please, thank you so much my dear and add little smiley faces and you get it done the same day. :-) lol

Was at Mazeppa bay over easter. Hotel staff say they are not going to be issuing permits for bikes or quads anymore. This is due to the disrespect the bikers have been showing to the local enviroment. Too much roadkill and road destroying especially in wet conditions.

I got my permits today,it took Bongeka 10days from receiving my application.Bongeka was very helpful and pleasant to deal with.

I sent through the following:
Application form
ID copy
Google earth map of the areas we will be going.

Makes a pleasant change from the normal Government departments that I deal with!!

The problem is those guys on quads and bikes do lots of damage to the roads and can be a noisy nuisance, we have a road going past our place and they are a menace sometimes.

Greetings guys, we fished Mazeppa and surrounds twice last year, both times we got our permits without waiting too long, like within a week. Both times we fished the area for over a week but nobody ever checked our driving permits.

Fished Mazeppa 5 times in the last 12 months, was checked 7 times and saw 4 people issued with R2000 fines and had their day's fishing cut short.

Were checked 8 times for fishing permits and every time saw fishermen fined and or sent back to cars or houses to get permits.

Remember if your gilly is handling tackle he needs a permit or he will be fined and sent away from the water. Get arrogant and cheeky with them and you'll be collecting your fishing tackle at the regional Conservation offices when you go pay your fines.

Hi All,

Please can someone provide me with some assistance. I have not been successful in getting ahold of Bongeka from the Umtata office - Probably tried the 047 5311191 no over 20 times. Have emailed the documents and not received any responses.

Anet from the EL office has been superb.

Is there by any chance an alternate no for the Umtata office?

IT doesn't cost a cent it's just so that they know who is using the coast legally and who not.

Welcome to the club! My last good fish was about a month ago on the left of the Pyp! Where did you go?

Hi Mike

Nice Kob! "Die pyp" being Strand?

I recently moved from Hermanus to Blouberg area for at least a couple of months and decided to explore the West coast a bit. So far have thrown a line near Melkbos (Bontkop area) and once at Ganzekraal in front of the Lapa.
I have done a fair amount of Sealine research on the West coast and am keen to try Spreeuwalle, the actual Kabeljou bank at GKraal, maybe even Soverby or further North at some stage. And then of course closer to home, Holbaai, Bontkop etc - love the look of that specific stretch of beach. Seems that some of the guys who were once very active in this region have long since disappeared off this forum - Subaruseun, Wayne and others. I'm very curious to know what lurks in these waters

The spot was the Pyp next to Beespens and Blue waters. There was a thread started by ZeeQ some time ago regarding Gaanzekraal and it had quite a bit of information with input from lots of members but my search on the link came up blank.

Maybe if we ask the mods nicely they can restore it for us. http://www.sealine.co.za/view_topic.php?id=45644&forum_id=16&highlight=Gaanzekraal

If you go to the HITW side then you can contact :
Bongeka Mvakade.
bongeka.mvakade@dedea.gov.za

This will be from : Coffee bay to Whole In The Wall

Umtata river Mouth upto Mbolompo Point

bongeka.mvakade@dedea.gov.za

Take note - I think they do not permit any vehicles any more at Mbolompo Point

When you send an email, make sure you attached your id - your vehicle registration and your fishing permit on the mail, that will speed up your request
