After much build-up and excitement, I was finally off to the Eastern Cape for a few weeks on 15th December. It rained all the way from Sir Lowry's Pass to the PE area! A sign of things to come? Surely not!

Having booked a house on the Marina in Port Alfred for a couple of weeks, I was hoping that we had left that weather behind and that we would get a few weeks of good weather! Thankfully, this turned out to be the case!

For the most part, we were presented with good weather and calmish seas. This allowed numerous opportunities to escape the madding crowd and venture out through the Kowie River mouth. As always seems to be the case when I visit the Port Alfred area, targeted species were mainly Cob and Geelbek.

Water temperature was mostly in the 17-20 deg range, although I recorded 12.4 deg about a mile from shore on one particular day! That one turned out to be one of the less productive days!

We were rewarded for our efforts with a few good sized cob ... got a few fish just over the 10kg mark. In addition to the usual Reds and the odd Poensie, we caught loads of undersize Cob and Geelbek which was great to see!

I still rate Port Alfred as one of the best holiday destinations along our coast ... definitely worth a visit if you haven't spent time there!

And then the looong way back to CT ... pulling a boat that distance is not great for your average fuel consumption figure! But definitely worth it!

Everytime I saw that Lee Cat I thought that I must go to the shop and introduce myself so I know who you are and if you are on the boat. But I didn't go down Main Road once in all time in PA - swak! Also passed the boat near Riet a few times. Didn't fish the comp but heard it picked up towards the end - congrats on the prize! Where did you get the tail - BI?

The river mouth can be tricky ,its semi protected by two piers but when the swell is up,they break across the mouth, also bigger swell sort of take you by surprise as you view to the west is blocked by the pier

A very flat day

As Mouldie says, it can get hairy when the swell picks up. Whether its true or not I don't know, but I have been told that Loyd's TSB will not insure your boat if you exit/enter through this river mouth.

But for the most part, it's fine.

Mostly VHF ,only a few boats with 29 megs ,but we hardly ever even use our radios radios. Only in comps the guys chat to each other
